Scottish Independence

Scottish Independence is a contentious subject, there are many in both Scotland and the rest of the UK stirring up all kinds of ill informed views on the subject. The problem I foresee with independence is that the people of Scotland are currently only getting rhetoric of bias from both Westminster and Holyrood.

With a monumental decision for the Scottish to make and the rest of the UK to accept, it seems fitting that we try and split the wheat from the chaff and write an unbias view on what we expect to happen. The idea of this blog site is to give people an outlet to discuss the different views of what people think in an informed and non malicious manner.

I have different views on the subject, but my own feeling is that the information given still doesnt allow me the true view of whether its in the interest of the people of Scotland. I will learn along with everyone else who decides to join my debate on whether it is right for the people of Scotland to vote YES or NO in 2014.

Just to let you know I am an Englishman, but one that works as an analyst and therefore my job is to ensure an unbiased view in everything I review and propose.

  1. I like the idea of an open debate that is not biased by ill-informed name calling and poorly researched "facts". There seems to be a lot of claims which I would like to explore (don't really have the time to trawl google at the moment):
-A lot of people highlight Norway as the ideal state but what is the tax burden in Norway? I vaguely remember from visiting there about 15 years ago that the cost of living was extortionate.
-I have heard the lack of funding for infrastructure being banded as a negative for Westminister but how much of this is actually down to local government.
-Can the alleged bonus to UK political negotiation derived from having Trident be quantified.
-Has the line defining Scottish territorial waters v rUK t.w. been defined and agreed and if so how does it actually carve the North Sea?

    All sensible replies welcome

  2. Hi Alastair,

Norway does have a high cost of living, I believe the UK is around 40% lower in price than Norway. The question is whether salary reflects this and from my research the salaries in Norway are higher than the UK by more than this 40%...again Im going from what I have found on the net.

The territorial waters are still open to debate from what I have seen. Scotland seems to want a linear line at the divide where the UK says the line follows land trajectory which goes at an angle north giving the UK more sea territory (and more of the Oil). Im following this up in the next couple of days as Ive started researching this for another article.

Ive been bitten by the bug on this subject and this is why Ive started this blog because I see too much bias ill informed vitrolic attacks.
